Trying to get paid…

I submitted Bearing Witness to Asimov’s magazine this morning. Since this is my first real attempt to get published I thought I should probably mark the occasion by posting the fact. The earliest I can expect to hear back from them is 5 weeks from now, but is more likely to fall within the 90 day window.

Does it really take that long to generate a rejection notice and mail it out? Heh, that is my expectation, but you never know. We shall see.

Last week I created a list of publishers and how much they pay per word. I plan on using this list as I submit more stories, and since each has their own guidelines it will be important to track what stories I send where, and to ensure that I don’t end up sending a simultaneous submission to a company that doesn’t play that game.

Believe it or not the payment scale is all over the place, ranging from .01 cent per word to .12 cents per word, although the average seems to fall between .08 – .10 cents. Obviously, this doesn’t generate a livable income (unless you sell a lot of stories), but anything is appreciated. Truthfully, it’s more the validation a sale provides, than the few hundred dollars received.

So, wish me luck. I’ll keep you in the loop as I get updates…
